New Student Orientation

Orientation

orientation

For students that are both preparing to enter the first year of college or transferring from another institution, New Student Orientation provides the information that is needed for a smooth and successful transition. New Student Orientation is an incoming student's introduction to life at Rutgers-Newark. Participation in its many activities provides a good foundation to begin life as a member of our community. All incoming first year and transfer students must attend one of our new student orientation sessions held over the summer. During orientation, incoming students are given the opportunity to learn more about Rutgers-Newark services such as financial aid, health and counseling services and academic support as well as connect with new classmates through activities led by our orientation leader staff.

Our Parent and Family Orientation program runs concurrently with, but separate from the New Student Orientation program. For each student orientation session, we hold a corresponding family orientation session during the same times. This experience will help strengthen the three-way bond that families, students and Rutgers-Newark will share over the next several years. We realize the importance and need for a support system for our students. We encourage students to become more independent and responsible as they form positive life habits and behaviors. We hope to work with families to build a support system for students so that they can successfully manage all of the transitions and changes they will encounter. Parent and Family Orientation provides families the opportunity to receive information that will aid in the family transition as well as the student transition.

Orientation Leaders (OLs) are members of the Office of Student Life and Leadership staff. The orientation leader is responsible for assisting each new student with the transition to the Rutgers-Newark community. Each OL is responsible for managing small orientation groups, facilitating group activities, and assisting with orientation preparations. Orientation Leaders must be available to participate in training in the Spring and Summer and during all orientation session dates. Orientation staff recruitment typically begins in the fall semester. Contact the Office of Student Life and Leadership at 973-353-5300 for additional information
