What is New Student Orientation?
New Student Orientation is a journey at Rutgers-Newark that begins with enrollment and extends well into and beyond a student’s first semester. During orientation new students are given information to assist in the transition to Rutgers-Newark.  Orientation prepares students for the educational opportunities and integration into Rutgers’ intellectual, cultural and social communities.

Is New Student Orientation mandatory?
All incoming students are expected to register for and attend a new student orientation session.


Who will I meet at orientation?
There will be various activities that allow you to interact with staff, current students, and fellow classmates.

Is orientation only for first year students?
Rutgers-Newark New Student Orientation is for incoming first year and transfer students.

Will I get to learn about any student organizations?
Yes, one of the many activities included in the orientation schedule includes the student showcase which highlights our vast and diverse student organizations. This will be your chance to sign up or get answers from any organization you are interested in.

Will I be able to talk to anyone from the Financial Aid Department?
Yes, there will be a time period dedicated to offices set up on a panel and students will get a chance to ask any questions that they may need answered.

Will I be able to obtain any information about housing?
Yes, there will be an opportunity to speak to a representative from Residence Life and Housing during one of our panel sessions.

What other departments/organizations will I expect to be there?
Some of the departments included in our panel discussions include Computing Services, Career Development, Dean of Students Affairs, Counseling Services and Health Services.

Will there be something for my family to do if they come?
Yes. There is a family orientation program that will be taking place at the same time. There will be information regarding family orientation registration posted to the website in late June.

Do I have to stay for the entire time?
The orientation program is designed for you to get the full university experience before school starts. Staying the entire time will give you the opportunity to have all of your questions answered and to receive important information vital to your success as a Rutgers-Newark student.

What should I wear to New Student Orientation?
Dress is casual during orientation. Please be sure to bring comfortable shoes as we will be doing some walking.  Additionally, air conditioned buildings can be quite chilly so please be prepared. Also please be sure to bring an umbrella in case it happens to rain during your session.

What’s an Orientation Leader (OL) or an Orientation Coordinator (OC)?
OL’s and OC’s are student staff members whose job is to help you adjust to life at Rutgers. OC’s work during the entire summer to assist with planning the new student orientation program, while OL’s come on board during each session to lead orientation groups.

I’m a transfer student should I attend Summer Orientation?
All new students, including transfers, are expected to attend a Summer Orientation Program.
