Our Parent and Family Orientation program runs concurrently with, but separate from the New Student Orientation program. For each student orientation session, we hold a corresponding family orientation session during the same times.  This experience will help strengthen the three-way bond that you, your student and Rutgers - Newark will share over the next several years. We realize the importance and need for a support system for our students. We encourage students to become more independent and responsible as they form positive life habits and behaviors. We hope to work with you to build a support system for your student so that he/she can successfully manage all of the transitions and changes they will encounter. Parent and Family Orientation allows’ families the opportunity to receive an abundant amount of information to aid in the family transition as well as the student transition.  This is done through focusing on topics including financial aid, academic requirements, policies and procedures and student wellness. This program is designed to help families gain insight into the Rutgers-Newark campus and overall student life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I never received/threw out my registration materials for Parent & Family Orientation?
Registration forms for Family Orientation will be mailed out the first week of July.  If you do not receive a registration form, contact the office at 973-353-5300 and we will send the materials out to you.

How can I communicate with my student during Orientation?
Because the students have a planned out schedule where they can interact with their peers and the families have their own program, communication can be done through cell phones or through the Orientation Leaders as they each will have a student list. 

Will we have any joint programs with the students?
There is a bit of program overlap in the beginning and end of the day but we encourage networking. We ask that parents do not try to accompany their students once the two programs split.

Where may we park during the Orientation program?
The Rutgers-Newark campus numerous meters and parking structures for use. We recommend using Deck One located on University Avenue across from Boyden Hall.

How many parents & guests attend Parent & Guest Orientation?
A large percentage, over 50%, of new students' parents and families attend Parent and Family Orientation.
